The Church - Discografia.

Formada em 1980 na capital australiana, Canberra, pelo vocalista, letrista e baixista Steve Kilbey (inglês, mudou-se com a família para a Austrália aos quatro anos), e seu amigo de infância, o guitarrista, Peter Koppes, de ascendência grega e holandesa. O The Church surge no início da década de 80 como tentativa mais madura e coerente de refletir as influências de Kilbey - que, naquela época, escrevia todas as canções sozinho e gravava-as num 4 track (muitas destas demos circulam pela internet e algumas delas renderam o álbum Freak Conclusions, editado em 2003) - que tinha sido frontman de uma banda glam nos anos 70, chamada Baby Grande (a banda não deixou registros oficiais). As principais influências de Kilbey que plasmariam o som do Church eram T-Rex, David Bowie, Brian Eno, krautrock, Beatles, Byrds e John Foxx (então vocalista do glam-experimental-art-rock Ultravox). Nesse caldeirão encontram-se todos os elementos que definem a música do The Church: psicodelia/surrealismo, experimentalismo, ambiência/climas (as guitarras cheias de efeitos às vezes soam como teclados, especialmente a de Koppes, tocada com um sem número de pedais especiais) e romantismo cerebral. 

Com a adição de Marty Willson-Piper, guitarrista virtuoso então recém-egresso da Inglaterra, e do baterista, Nick Ward, ex-colega de turma de Kilbey, o Church estaria (mais ou menos) completo. O primeiro álbum veio rápido, sendo gravado em fins de 1980 e lançado no ano seguinte. Of Skins and Heart foi produzido por Chris Gilbey e mixado por Bob Clearmountain e traz o hit-single "The Unguarded Moment". O som predominantemente new wave do álbum falharia em captar o jingle-jangle da Rickenbacker de Piper e soaria muito mecânico e rude (muito por conta da bateria de Ward, que foi substituído por Richard Ploog, durante o lançamento de OSAH) para os padrões de polimento e sofisticação da banda. 

Tais traços apareceriam num EP 7" duplo, nas músicas "Tear It All Away", "Too Fast For You" e "Sisters" (primeira composição assinada pela banda), que seriam incluídas em várias versões do primeiro álbum (também editado como The Church e com capa diferente). Mas seria o álbum seguinte, The Blurred Crusade, que consolidaria o conceito sonoro da banda. Lançado em 1982, mixado e produzido por Clearmountain, BC espelharia uma sintonia então inédita entre produtor e banda.
